Boston Dallas Trade

Mavs Acquire Grant Williams in Three-Team Trade

The Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, and San Antonio Spurs have finalized a three-team trade, sending forward Grant Williams to the Mavs.

The veteran forward joins Dallas in a deal that also includes the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs. Williams is set to sign a four-year, $53 million contract with the Mavericks as part of the agreement.

The trade, which was finalized on July 12, 2023, adds a versatile defensive wing to the Mavericks' roster. Williams, a restricted free agent, had been a key part of the Celtics' rotation in recent years, known for his hustle, rebounding, and three-point shooting.

The Mavericks have been actively seeking to improve their wing depth this offseason, and Williams fits the bill as a player who can contribute on both ends of the court. He averaged 8.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for the Celtics last season, while shooting 41.1% from three-point range.

The deal marks the latest chapter in the Mavericks' offseason moves, which have also included trading for star guard Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. With Williams and Irving now on board, the Mavericks hope to make a deep playoff run in the upcoming season.

The Celtics, meanwhile, receive an undisclosed draft pick from the Spurs as part of the trade. Williams had been a valuable contributor for Boston, but they ultimately decided to move on from him in order to free up cap space and improve their roster flexibility.

The Spurs, who have been rebuilding in recent years, acquire Reggie Bullock and a future first-round pick from the Mavericks in the deal. Bullock, a veteran wing, provides some shooting and defense for the Spurs.
