The family of Angela Merkel, the former Chancellor of Germany, is of German and Polish descent. Merkel was born Angela Dorothea Kasner on July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, Germany. Her father, Horst Kasner, was a Lutheran pastor, and her mother, Herlind Kasner (née Jentzsch), was a teacher of Latin and English.
Merkel has two younger siblings: Marcus Kasner, a physicist, and Irene Kasner, an occupational therapist. In her childhood and youth, Merkel was known among her family and friends as "Angie".
Angela Merkel's Political Career
Merkel began her political career in the 1980s, when she joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). She was elected to the Bundestag, the German parliament, in 1990, and served as Minister for Women and Youth from 1991 to 1994. In 1998, she was appointed Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
In 2005, Merkel became the first female Chancellor of Germany. She was re-elected in 2009, 2013, and 2017. During her time in office, Merkel has overseen a number of important events, including the German reunification in 1990, the eurozone crisis in 2010-2012, and the European migrant crisis in 2015-2016.
Merkel is known for her pragmatic and centrist approach to politics. She has been praised for her leadership during the eurozone crisis, and for her handling of the European migrant crisis. Merkel is also a strong advocate for the European Union.
