Hurricane Beryl Intensifies to Category 5, Earliest on Record
Tropical Storm Strengthens over Gulf of Mexico
Forecasts Predict Landfall in Texas as Category 1 or 2 Hurricane
Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record, has intensified over the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in Texas early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane.
Live tracking maps, satellite images, and forecasts indicate that Beryl is now forecast to make landfall over South Padre Island, Texas, close to the Texas-Mexico border.
According to the latest forecast, Beryl is strengthening rapidly and is expected to make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane or higher. Models suggest that a close pass or landfall is possible near South Padre Island beginning late Wednesday morning.
Hurricane Beryl previously made landfall on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula on Friday morning, bringing heavy rains and damaging winds.
